Since 2001 Americans have been able to peek at their Google behavior patterns, showing what their top searches have been.

On Wednesday, December 10, 2008 Google released the most-popular Canuck search queries for the first 11 months of 2008. Canadians have always shared a passion for hockey, beavers and maple syrup but now Canadians have been united in their interests of Face book.com, Politics, Britney Spears and Google can prove it.

This is the first time Canadians have had a peak at their Google behavior, as well, Google released similar results for 35 other countries.

This is a good lesson on keyword and keyword phrases and a great addition in our 7 part series. Google will always show you the hot trends, help you to brainstorm on what is the most searched for terms and they have an arsenal of information on what the competition is doing in the niche you speak of.

Keywords and Keyword phrases is the stuff you are asking Google for – the phrase “Google It” means you are asking Google for information and based on your queries Google supplies you with that information. They go a bit further than this as anything you query on gets stored in a huge database.

How many searches were done on the name Britney Spears?

Google can tell you from the data everyone in the world put in. As of this writing the report shows 11,100,000 searches done in November 2008 – WOW!!

Does this mean if you use the keyword phrase Britney Spears in your website you will drive a ton of that traffic to your site and make thousands if not millions of dollars?

The quick answer is NO.

Why not?

Simple answer – THE COMPETITION.

Here is a quick explanation:

Yes there are millions searching for Britney Spears in Google database but there are millions more advertisers who are using “Britney Spears” as a keyword phrase to attract readers to their sites. As of this writing if you do an exact match keyword research on “Britney Spears” you will see there are 109,000,000 sites using that exact phrase for advertising.

That is the same as having three Starbucks Coffee shops or Three Tim Horton’s Coffee shops in a town of 1000 people – there is only so much money to go around, therefore the sales spread too thin to make the business successful.

Keyword Research tools show exactly what people are searching for by breaking results down to a more manageable analysis of keywords or keyword phrases. You can even use these keyword search tools to understand  what the audience in Face book.com are searching for within the Facebook arena.
